2008-2009 Performance Schedule

Of War and Peace, October 10, 2008, 7:30 p.m., First Presbyterian Church, Alva (628 Church Street)

  • Join the University Chorale as they present a program of works that explore the relationship between aspects of conflict and states of peace.  The program will feature Misgivings, a three-movement cantata by California-based composer Jenni Brandon.

Songs of Faith , October 14, 2008, 7:30 p.m., Herod Hall Auditorium

  • Join the University Singers and the NWOSU Concert Choir as they present songs of worship from a variety faith traditions.  Featured works will include Handel’s Zadok the Priest, Keith Hampton’s Praise His Holy Name and the Missa Brevis by Scottish composer James MacMillan.

Sing We Noel , December 4, 2008, 7:30 p.m., Location TBA

  • The University Singers and University Chorale will join forces to present a holiday performance featuring carol settings from the Renaissance and early Baroque as well as the 20th-century and the Christmas Oratorio by Camille Saint-Saens.

Fine Arts Holiday Concert, December 6, 2008, 7:30 p.m., Herod Hall Auditorium

  • The NWOSU Concert Choir and the Ranger Band will present their traditional annual Holiday spectacular.

  • Join the University Singers and University Chorale as they present a program of works that embody one or more aspect of transformation. 

Northwest Oklahoma Concert Series: the Enid Symphony, Dr. Ling-Yu Kan and NWOSU Concert Choir, April 6, 2009, 7:30 p.m., Herod Hall Auditorium                                               

  • Northwestern is very pleased to be able to welcome the Enid Symphony to Alva. Under the direction of maestro Douglas Newell, the program will feature soloist, Northwestern piano faculty Dr. Ling-Yu Kan. The NWOSU Concert Choir will also take the stage for Randal Thompson’s Testament of Freedom.

Songs of Children, April 28, 2009,  7:30 p.m. , Herod Hall Auditorium

  • Join the University Chorale as they present a concert of works that celebrate innocence as well as the corruption of innocence.  The program will feature the oratorio Songs of Children by Robert Convery, which beautifully sets texts that were written by children at the Terezin concentration camp during the second world war.

2008-2009 Special Events

NWOSU All-State Choir Workshop, October 4, 2008, 8:30-5:00 p.m., Fine Arts Room 200 and the Herod Hall Auditorium

  • This year we are proud to reinstate a long-standing tradition at Northwestern, the All-State Choir Workshop.  Any high school student who is interested in auditioning for the Oklahoma All-State Choir is invited to join us on the Northwestern campus for a day of rehearsal devoted to learning the All-State audition music.  The day's activities will be capped-off by a performance of that music at 4:30 p.m. in the Herod Hall Auditorium.

OSSAA District Vocal Contest, February 24, 2009, 8:00 a.m.-5:00  p.m., Various Locations

Northwestern Oklahoma Choral Conductors’ Symposium, February 27-28, 2009 (27th- 3:00-10:00 p.m. , 28th- 9:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.),  Fine Arts Room 200

  • Refine Conducting Gesture, Improve Rehearsal Techniques, Expand Knowledge of Music Literature... 

    Building on the success of last year’s Northwestern Oklahoma Conductors’ Symposium, we are pleased to announce the first annual Conductors’ Symposium devoted entirely to working with choirs.  Specifically designed for music educators, church musicians and graduate students in conducting, the Northwestern Oklahoma Choral Conductors’ Symposium provides practical instruction in gesture and rehearsal technique.  Conductors who are interested in attending may apply for either conductor status or participant status.  Only a
    limited number of individuals will be accepted to conduct. Each conductor will be assigned two twenty minute sessions on the podium during which they will conduct the Northwestern Chorale. During each session they will receive comments and instruction from our featured clinicians. All participants will be actively involved in discussions, lectures and observation of all conducting sessions.

Alumni Concert Choir, April  25 , 2009, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Fine Arts Room 200 and Herod Hall Auditorium

  • The second annual Alumni Concert Coir will bring together alumni from across the region to meet for a day of music-making and camaraderie.  The group will rehearse from 8:30-4:30 before presenting a concert at 4:30.
