NORTHWESTERN BAND TO TRAVEL TO WASHINGTON, D.C.
Julie Baldwin and Daniel Baldwin of Blackwell, members of the Northwestern Oklahoma State University band, will celebrate spring break by marching through the streets of the nation’s capital as part of the city’s 33rd annual St. Patrick’s Day parade.
The band, with director Dr. Mike Knedler, will depart Northwestern on the morning of Friday, March 12, arriving in Washington, D.C., around noon on Saturday. Plans for that day include a tour of Mount Vernon and attendance at a performance by the Naval Academy Chamber Winds and Brass Ensemble at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
The Northwestern musicians will line up for the 11 a.m. (CST) parade on Sunday morning. The parade route is down Constitution Avenue between 7th and 17th streets. John Walsh, host of “America’s Most Wanted” television program, is the grand marshal. This year’s theme is “Making a Difference.”
After the parade, band members will change from their uniforms and break into small groups for visits at the Smithsonian Institute. That evening, they will make a nighttime tour of various national monuments.
Monday will include visits to Arlington National Cemetery, the Capitol, National Archives and the Smithsonian. The band will depart Washington after dinner that evening and will be back in Alva around 10 p.m. on Tuesday, March 16.
