NORTHWESTERN MATH DEPARTMENT RECEIVES GRANT FOR ACADEMY
The Northwestern Oklahoma State University Mathematics Department has received a $7,500 grant from ConocoPhillips to sponsor a Summer Math Academy from May 30-June 4 at the Alva campus.
The academy is for 9th through 11th grade students and exposes them to the many applications of mathematics, as well as to the technology available to enhance understanding of mathematics. Students are led by Tim Maharry, Billy Stewart and Dr. Sheila Brintnall of the Northwestern mathematics faculty.
Classroom activities include hands-on use of Texas Instruments graphing calculators, as well as laboratory sessions with mathematical software such as Derive and Mathematica. The week-long academy also introduces students to real world applications of mathematics through field trips to Vance Air Force Base in Enid, ConocoPhillips in Ponca City, the Byron State Fish Hatchery and Cargill Salt near Freedom.
Interested students are encouraged to apply by contacting Maharry at (580) 327-8583 or by visiting the Northwestern Math Academy website at www.nwosu.edu/mathacademy.htm.
