NORTHWESTERN ENGLISH STUDENT AWARDED FOR ENGLISH EXCELLENCE

Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s Lindsay Headlee, Alva sophomore, was selected by Northwestern faculty to receive the 2005 Geraldine Burns Award for Excellence in English studies.Lindsay Headlee and Dr. Jerry Nye

Headlee is an honors student and an award-winning writer. She won the fiction writing contest in October, 2004, sponsored by the Enid Writer’s Club at Northwestern. She also won the Festival of Words Writing Conference held at the Northwestern-Enid campus.

 “Lindsay is an excellent student and a joy to have in class,” said Dr. Jim Yates, associate professor of English. “She has the creative and critical ability that exemplifies being an English major. Everyone in the English department is very proud of her for winning this award.”

The Oklahoma Council of Teachers of English (OCTE) presents this award to one student in each college or university in Oklahoma. Each winner receives a one-year membership in OCTE. A special certificate was presented to all winners of the Geraldine Burns Award in Oklahoma City University on April 6.

Dr. Jerry Nye, past president of the OCTE, created the Geraldine Burns Award to honor one undergraduate student from each institution of higher education in Oklahoma. Geraldine Burns taught English for 44 years where she inspired numerous writing contest winners. Burns served as Oklahoma Teacher of the Year in 1986.
