NORTHWESTERN TO OFFER JESUS IN FILM INTERIM CLASS

Dr. James Yates, chair of the English, Foreign Language and Humanities Department at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, will be teaching a class on Jesus in Film over the interim, May 23 through 27.

            The class will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will be available in Alva, Enid and Woodward via ITV. It will cover the Jesus film genre through films, lecture and discussion.

            “We are going to look at how Hollywood has presented this historical, cultural and religious figure, and how the public has responded to that,” Yates said. “I’m going to trace the development of the Jesus film and show six landmark Jesus films,” Yates said.

            The films will include “From the Manger to the Cross,” “The Greatest Story Ever Told,” “Jesus of Nazareth,” “The Last Temptation of Christ,” “Jesus of Montreal,” and “The Passion of the Christ.”

            Undergraduate students who take the course will be required to do a film plot of a Jesus film, keep a journal and take a final exam. Graduate students will write an analytical essay. The course is worth two hours of credit.

            “It’s not a religion class, and it’s not going to be teaching Christianity,” Yates said. “If people get that out of it, that’s fine.”
