STATE REGENTS MATCH FUNDS FOR LINDSAY ENDOWED CHAIR

Funds provided by the estate of J.T. (Jake) and Jayne Lindsay for an endowed chair recently have been matched by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, providing Northwestern Oklahoma State University with its 14th fully-funded faculty chair position.

A program established by the State Regents matches dollar for dollar endowed gifts for lectureships, professorships and chairs at public colleges and universities. A minimum gift of $250,000 is required for endowed chairs.s.

“The endowed chair program is an integral part of attracting and retaining quality faculty, thus ensuring a high degree of quality in our academic programs,” said Dr. Paul Beran, president of Northwestern.

“The Lindsay family has long recognized the importance of higher education opportunities for our youth and also has shown a great affinity for Northwestern. We are so grateful for their generous support of the University.”

This is the first of two endowed chairs funded by the Lindsays. A second endowed chair is expected to be funded later this year.

Jake Lindsay was a campus leader during his college days from 1937-42. He was a yell leader and twice served as president of the Wranglers, a prestigious spirit andsocial organization for men. He also served as president of the Delta Tau Gamma fraternity and was active in student government.

Following graduation, Lindsay began a highly successful furniture business in Oklahoma City. He married Jayne Jones in 1945.

Lindsay also served on the board of trustees of the Northwestern Foundation from 1984-1987.

Jake Lindsay died in March of 2002 and Jayne Lindsay died eight months later.

The endowed chairs are just the latest example of the philanthropic spirit displayed by the Lindsays. In 1994 the couple set up a charitable remainder trust with the Foundation and also established a $100,000 scholarship endowment, with preference given to students from Jake’s hometown of Okeene, Blaine County and northwest Oklahoma.
