NORTHWESTERN STUDENT PLACES AT RESEARCH DAY AT THE CAPITOL

Tiffiney Walls of Enid, a senior psychology major at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, placed second at Research Day at the Capitol on March 31.

Her project, “Socioeconomic Status and Sex Role Stereotypes Toward Women,” was among more than 20 displays prepared by students from universities and colleges across Oklahoma. Her research sponsor is Dr. Wayne McMillin, professor of psychology.

The posters were on display in the fourth floor rotunda in the state capitol and awards were presented in the Blue Room. The student researchers also had the opportunity to meet with state legislators for a photo session.

Walls has entered her project in the annual Ranger Research Day in the Student Center on Friday.

Research Day at the Capitol is sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education (OSRHE) and Oklahoma EPSCoR (Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research).

The EPSCoR Advisory Committee is chaired by Higher Education Chancellor Glen D. Johnson. Since Fiscal Year 2003, the OSRHE have invested $10.1 million for new EPSCoR projects, while university participants in the programs in this time period have invested $5.4 million.

Oklahoma currently has $111.2 million in active EPSCoR/IDeA (Institutional Development Award program of the National Institutes of Health) funding. The broad objectives of EPSCoR and IDeA are to build state research capacity, to fuel economic development and to provide students with access to higher education opportunities.

EPSCoR also is a sponsor of the annual Oklahoma Research Day (ORD) held each fall semester. In 2008, ORD will be Nov. 14 at Northeastern State University-Broken Arrow.
