FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                        September 8, 2008

Ball in the House will kick off the Northwest Oklahoma Concert Series Sept. 18.

Ball in the House, a five man a cappella group from Boston, will kickoff the 2008-2009 Northwest Oklahoma Concert Series at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva on Thursday, Sept. 18, at 7:30 p.m.

Ball in the House is a pop/R&B group that has astounded national audiences with their musical talents. They wrote and recorded the current Cool Whip campaign. Showcasing their talents, they have opened for such artists as Gladys Knight, Jessica Simpson, Blondie, The Temptations and Kool & the Gang.

On Monday, Nov. 10, the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra will light up the stage. This orchestra has continued successfully for decades and is still in great demand all over the world.  Bill Tole, trombonist, along with Nancy Knorr, featured singer, help complete the Orchestra.

Dervish will perform on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009. This high-energy Irish folklore group is from Sligo in Northwest Ireland. With the combination of vocal and instrumental skills, this seven-person group will play intriguing, powerful music for any type of audience.

The final performance of the series features a local group on Monday, April 6, 2009. The Enid Symphony Orchestra, directed by Douglas Newell, will perform and feature pianist Ling-Yu Kan, assistance professor of music, and the Northwestern Concert Choir.

Newell has led a successful campaign to convert Enid’s historic Knox Building Masonic Temple into the Enid Symphony Center. His work with the Symphony has been recognized by the State of Oklahoma and the Oklahoma Association of Symphony Orchestras.

All performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be held in the Herod Hall Auditorium.

Season tickets now are available at Holder Drug, Schuhmacher’s, Alva Chamber of Commerce and the NWOSU Bookstore or by calling (580) 327-8692. Adult season tickets are $30 (a $40 value) and student season tickets are $15 (a $20 value). Tickets to individual performances will be sold on an “as available” basis at $10 for adults and $5 for students.

Again this year, four different sponsorship packages are being offered, each including season tickets, reserved seating and program advertisements.

“Each year, the Northwest Oklahoma Concert Series strives to bring outstanding music and cultural events to Alva and the entire northwestern Oklahoma region,” said Dr. Stephen Kingsbury, chair of the Department of Fine Arts and coordinator of the Concert Series.

“The Concert Series has a long tradition of providing quality performances that contribute profoundly to the artistic and cultural life of the community.

“However, such quality acts are expensive.  Funding for the Northwest Oklahoma Concert Series is provided, in large part, by ticket sales, as well as the generous support of our patrons.  Money that is raised through sponsorship and ticket sales is what enables us to continue to bring the best possible performers to Alva.

“Put simply, the concert series relies on the continued support of the community in order to survive.  Purchasing season tickets or one of our sponsorship packages is a tangible way for individuals, families, businesses and organizations to support this wonderful community asset.”

The sponsorship packages are as follows:

Producers Circle, $100 to $299 Contribution—Three season tickets, seating in reserved section, name recognition in concert program.

Directors Circle, $300 to $599 Contribution—Six season tickets, seating in reserved section, name recognition in concert program, quarter-page ad in concert program.

Composers Circle, $600 to $999 Contribution—Twelve season tickets, seating in reserved section, name recognition in concert program, half-page ad in concert program.

Impresarios Circle, $1,000 or more Contribution—Eighteen season tickets, seating in reserved section, name recognition in concert program, full-page ad in concert program.

The reserved seating section at each concert will be held until five minutes prior to the performance.

Anyone interested in buying a sponsorship package should contact Kingsbury at (580) 327-8692 or

The Northwest Oklahoma Concert Series is made possible with the assistance of the Oklahoma Arts Council, the National Endowment for Fine Arts and the Share Trust of Alva.
