FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                        September 3, 2008

The C.W. Wisdom Trust and the Wisdom family continue to show their support for Northwestern Oklahoma State University through a second major gift in as many months.

Five pieces of farm equipment was given by the Wisdom’s to Northwestern’s agriculture department to aid in the school’s effort to begin an agriculture education program.

The equipment includes a John Deere 4840 tractor, a 39-foot John Deere spring tooth, a 24-foot Krause double fold disk, a 22-foot John Deere chisel, and a John Deere 3710 six-bottom plow.

“We have worked for nearly a year in securing the necessary approval and support to begin an agriculture education program,” said Dr. Janet Cunningham, university president.

“As part of this effort, we identified needs in our agriculture program that must be addressed, such as improvements to the University Farm and the need for additional farm implements.

“The Wisdom family has always been strong supporters of agriculture and education. They have recognized the need and stepped forward to provide much-needed support. We are truly grateful for their continued support of our students.”

The gift of farm equipment follows a $250,000 gift from the Wisdom Family Foundation to Northwestern to endow a faculty chair in art, allowing the university to begin an academic minor in the field of study.

Dr. Peggy Wisdom, daughter of the late C.W. and Grace Wisdom, said agriculture has played a prominent part in her family’s life.

“My grandfather emigrated from Germany to the United States to 1883 and homesteaded in the Cheyenne-Arapaho land run, farming and raising shorthorn cattle,” Wisdom said.

“We were all taught an appreciation of the land, and everyone grew up with an interest in farming.

“I really feel we do not have enough opportunities for young people to learn about farming and gain the same appreciation for it that my family experienced. That is why this program at Northwestern is so important.”

Wisdom said in addition to its support of Northwestern, the Wisdom family and the Wisdom Family Foundation will be involved in supporting other projects that will benefit the local community.

C.W. and Grace Wisdom were well-known for their leadership of Alva State Bank and Trust Company and the First National Bank of Okeene.

Dr. Peggy Wisdom is Professor of Neurology at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. She currently is Chief of Neurology/ Rehabilitation at the Oklahoma City Veterans' Affairs Medical Center.
