Zoology students study animal behavior

The students in Aaron Place's general zoology class recently performed lab exercises in quantifying animal behavior. The students above were studying the schooling behavior in hybrid sunfish. The Byron State Fish hatchery provided 30 young sunfish for the lab.  To do this, students measured the amount of time the test fish spent in close proximity to another fish that was sequestered in a submerged gallon jar at on end of the fish tank. Other students, seen below, were observing exploratory behavior in western diamondback rattlesnakes.  The students had to define several specific behaviors and then determine the best way to quantify those behaviors. The entry way into the Science Amphitheatre was locked to allow the snakes to move freely around the area.
