M.L. Sharp pledges $200,000 to Vision for Victory campaign
M.L. Sharp, a 1954 graduate of Northwestern Oklahoma State University and a long-time supporter of the school’s programs, has pledged $200,000 to the Vision for Victory Campaign for athletics.

“I am happy to be able to help Northwestern with this important project,” Sharp said. “The Vision for Victory Campaign needs to be a success.”

Sharp’s gift brings Northwestern closer to beginning phases I and II of the Victory for Victory projects – construction of a new football locker room and major renovations to the baseball venue.

Former Northwestern Ranger quarterback Al Hunt, who is a wide receiver for the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz Arena Football 2 team, is prominently displayed on a new billboard near the Ford Center
that advertises the arena team. The sign can be seen from I-40 traveling west, at the Robinson exit. The Yard Dawgz have four games remaining with three at home, including Saturday vs. Lubbock, July 19 vs. Tulsa and July 26 vs. Amarillo. They travel to Albany, Ga., to play South Georgia on July 12. Northwestern makes good showing at college finals rodeoKody Woodward
Kody Woodward of the Northwestern Oklahoma State University rodeo team came within .1 of a second of capturing a championship in steer wrestling at the 60th College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo., last week.

The Dupree, S.D., cowboy was leading the steer wrestling competition at the end of the three preliminary go-rounds by .2 seconds, but drew a tough steer for the championship round. Read more...

Alumni Association plans fan bus to Ranger football game in S.D.
The Northwestern Oklahoma State University Alumni Association is taking reservations from Ranger football fans to ride a chartered bus to the Saturday, September 13, regular season football game against Black Hills State University in Spearfish, S.D.

Alumni director Lizabeth Richey said that on Friday, September 12, the bus will begin loading on the east side of Ranger Field at 4:30 a.m. with departure from Alva scheduled for 5 a.m. The bus will arrive at Mount Rushmore around 6 p.m. for an hour of exploration at the national monument. We will arrive in Deadwood, S.D. around 8 p.m. and stay the night at the First Gold Gaming Hotel.

Erika Birk joins university relations staff at Northwestern
Erika Birk officially began working as a university relations specialist at Northwestern this wErika Birkeek. Birk fills the position held for 24 years by Lois Hudgins, who is retiring Thursday.

Birk is a 2000 Gridley (Kan.) High School graduate and attended Butler County College where she received an Associate of Arts degree in 2002. Continuing her education at Kansas State University, she graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in public relations.

Northwestern offering summer historical workshop
“Oklahoma Character, A Summer Institute for Oklahoma Teachers, Students and Interested Historians” will be offered July 14-17 at Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s Enid campus. The workshop will meet each day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Topics will include “Pre-History, Cherokee Outlet and Chisholm Trail,” “Land Run and Transportation,” “Early Enid History and Government” and “Territory and Statehood.”

The intensive four-day course will be divided between classroom lectures, hands-on training and field trips. Lectures and re-enactments will be led by individuals from the Oklahoma Historical Society, Northwestern-Enid and the Railroad Museum of Oklahoma, as well as by regional historians, authors and local craftsmen.  Read more...


Upward Bound students launching rockets, learning trig


Upward Bound students at Northwestern Oklahoma State University took their Trigonometry class outside this week . Tanner Ward of Cherokee; instructor Aaron Randall, Burlington High School math teacher; Kira Harrison, Fairview; and Cristal Navarro, Ringwood, go over their calculations made after launching a rocket. The group measured the distance from they were standing to view the launch, then used a protractor with weights to measure the angle of elevation. By taking these two pieces of information, the students could use their trig ratios to estimate the altitude of the rocket.

Miss Northwestern earns prizes at Miss Oklahoma Pageant
Ashlynn Frey of Lahoma recently made her first appearance in the Miss Oklahoma Pageant earlier this month as Miss Northwestern Oklahoma State University 2008.

Frey, who is a sophomore majoring in early childhood education, earned a $950 cash award, plus other prizes for the “salute ad campaign” for the Miss Oklahoma program.  Read more...


Decker, Earnest graduate from Oklahoma Leadership Arts
Two Northwestern Oklahoma State University instructors recently graduated from Oklahoma Leadership Arts, a project of the Oklahoma Arts Council, established to create a statewide network of community arts leaders and advocates. 

Dr. Kay Decker, chair of the Social Sciences Department and professor of sociology, and Kathy Earnest, Instructor of English at NWOSU joined 28 other Oklahomans from all quadrants of the state to expand their capacity to develop and expand the arts in their own communities and region.

High school students participate in math academy
Eleven high school students were on the Northwestern Oklahoma State University campus at the end of May for a summer academy titled “Mathematics Technology: An Applications Paradigm.” The academy is sponsored by a grant from ConocoPhillips.  Read more...


You Should Know
Community summer band seeking members
Area musicians are asked to dust off their instruments and join fellow players this summer in the Alva Community Band.

The first rehearsal of the band led by Dr. Kathryn Lindberg, director of bands at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, was May 12, and all subsequent rehearsals occur each Monday. The sessions are from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Room 310 of the Fine Arts Building. Instruments can be provided for those participants who need them.

Lindberg encourages musicians of all ages to join the group.

A public performance will be presented later in the summer at a location and time to be announced.
